Austin Healey 100-Series

The Austin-Healey 100 series is a sports car built from 1953 to 1956, developed by Donald Healey, produced by Healey's Small Car Company in Warwick, and based on the Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals. Healey built a Healey 100 for the 1952 London Motor Show and the design made such an impression on Austin's Managing Director Leonard Lord that a deal was struck with Healey to produce the car in quantity at Austin's Longbridge factory. The car was renamed the Austin-Healey 100.

The "100" name comes from Donald Healey, who selected the name from the car's power (100 mph) (160 km/h), as opposed to the Austin-Healey 3000, which was named after the 3000cc engine.

Production of the Austin-Healey 100 Series was completed at Austin's Longbridge plant off the A90 and based on a fully finished and painted body/chassis produced by Jensen in West Bromwich, in an arrangement the two companies had previously entered into with Austin A40 Sports.

The 100 was the first of three models that would later be called the Big Healeys to differentiate them from the much smaller Austin-Healey Sprite. The Big Healeys are often referred to by their 3-character model designations rather than their models, as the model names do not accurately reflect mechanical differences and similarities.
