The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and was produced until February 23, 1971. Over the years, the W113 has evolved from a sports car into a comfortable Grand Tourer. US models were usually equipped with the four-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came standard with four-speed transmission or the optional ZF five-speed manual transmission. In Europe, manual transmission cars without air conditioning were still the most popular. More than half of the 23,885 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLs were sold in the US.

The main change from the 250SL to the 280 SL was an upgrade to the 2778cc M130 engine with 170PS max power, which ultimately gave the W113 plenty of power.

North American models were slightly different from European models. The most obvious difference was the sealed beam headlights (required in the USA). Other differences on the North American models were the gauges, chrome bumpers and lower rear axle ratios. 280 SL engines for the US market required emission control modifications; reduced compression ratio and a modified injection pump. Automatic transmission, air conditioning and white wall tires were more popular in the US than elsewhere.
