MG MGA
The MGA is a sports car made by the MG division of the British Motor Corporation from 1955 to 1962. It replaced the older T-type cars and represented a complete styling breakthrough from the older vehicles. The car was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. A total of 101,081 cars were sold. After production in July 1962, the vast majority was exported. Only 5869 cars were sold in the domestic market. The MGA was replaced by the MGB.
The MGA design goes back to 1951, when MG designer Syd Enever created a streamlined body for George Philips TD Le Mans car. The problem with this car was the driver's high seating position due to the limitations of the TD chassis. A new chassis was made with the side sections further apart. A prototype was built and shown to BMC chairman Leonard Lord. He turned down the design because he had just struck a deal with Donald Healey for the production of Austin-Healey's. Due to the poor sales figures of the traditional models, something had to change. The car (originally UA series) came back. Because this car was so different from the older MG models, it was called the MGA, the "first of a new line". A new engine was also available with no longer the original intended XPAG unit, but with the BMC corporate B-series type resulting in a lower hood.
The MGA had a body-on-frame and used the straight-4 "B-series" engine from the MG Magnette Saloon with rear-wheel drive and a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was available with wire wheels or steel-disc wheels.
