1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL
Produced from 1963 to 1967, the Mercedes Benz 230SL was the successor to the widely popular 300 and 190SL lines. The 1964 Mercedes Benz 230 SL, boasted an inline 6 cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system that was adapted from the diesel engines. The 1964 230 SL was also rear-wheel drive, but was equipped with independent rear suspension – a feature that greatly improved road handling. The early SL’s were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top in the so-called “Coupe / Roadster” configuration, but there was also the “California Coupe” version that came with the removable hardtop only. In these models, the soft top well is removed, and a drop-down bench seat was installed in its place. This rear seat is small and not very useful, however, this “California Coupe” remains one of the most sought-after classic cars in the Mercedes SL line.
Looking to purchase a Classic Mercedes?
Approximately 6911 of the 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL models rolled off the factory floor in Stuttgart. In fact, from July 1963 to January 1967 alone there were approximately 19831 230 SL’s produced. If you are trying to choose between the purchase of a 1963 and 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL, you’ll be pleased to know that little was changed between these 2 years. In fact, the only outward changes on the US versions during this time frame included the wheel width increasing from 5.5 to 6 inches, and in November 1964 the spare tire well was removed and the tire was mounted horizontally.
