1948 Porsche 356
Prior to the German invasion of Poland, Porsche had built three Type 64 cars for a Berlin to Rome race in 1939 that was never run. In 1948, Ferdinand Ferry Porsche created the Porsche 356. A 4 cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car. The Porsche 356 was road certified in Austria on June 8, 1948. The Porsche 356 would go down in history as Porsches first production vehicle. These early 356 cars relied heavily on Volkswagen parts. By the late 50's, Porsche had quickly refined the car, eliminating the dependence on VW parts and mechanics. The early 356 cars were handcrafted in aluminum, but in 1950 when production moved to Germany, models became steel-bodied. From 1948, it took Porsche almost 2 years to manufacture its first 50 cars.
